ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews recommend businesses they can find, read and confirm: clear answers on your own site, the same facts across the web, real reviews, and mentions on sites they already trust. This guide is the method we use, built on a 200-business ChatGPT study, an honest test of our own agency, and what Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity officially say.

Yes, but not by tricking it: AI answers name businesses whose facts they can find, read and confirm in several places, so the work is making your site answer buyer questions plainly and making the rest of the web agree with it.
Nobody controls what an AI says, and anyone who promises a guaranteed mention is guessing. What you can control are the inputs: whether the AI crawlers can reach your site, whether your pages answer the question a buyer asked, whether your name, address and services match everywhere, and whether independent sites and real customers vouch for you.
Google is direct about this. It says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal SEO, and no special structured data to add (Google: AI features and your website). ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude run their own search crawlers, but they reward the same things.
One honest note before we start: when we tested our own agency in October 2026, ChatGPT named us for none of our 8 buyer questions. This guide is the fix list we are working through on our own site as well as our clients’.
We took 200 businesses across India, the UAE, the UK and the US, wrote the question a real buyer in each category would ask, and put it to ChatGPT with web search switched on. Then we checked one thing: was the business named? (Full study on our AI SEO page.)
Most buyers who ask ChatGPT do get a shortlist. The problem is that most businesses aren’t on it.
In 107 of the 173 answers that named brands, ChatGPT recommended someone, just not the business we were checking. Many of those businesses had working websites and some Google rankings. A ranking gets you a link on a results page. A recommendation needs the AI to be confident enough to name you in a sentence, and that confidence comes from more than your own website.
Before telling anyone else how to do this, we ran the test on SocialOrange. We asked ChatGPT 8 buyer questions in our own category: the best digital marketing agencies in Bangalore, an SEO company, a social media agency, an AI SEO agency, D2C marketing, healthcare marketing, SEO pricing and performance marketing.
SocialOrange was named in 0 of 8.
When we asked about SocialOrange by name, ChatGPT knew our founder and the year we started. It took those facts from our own website and from a press release carried by Business Standard in May 2023. It also quoted our Google rating: 4.0 from 22 reviews.
For the 8 buyer questions it leaned again and again on Clutch, GoodFirms and Google reviews. Those are the sources it trusts to answer “who should I hire” in our category, and that is where our footprint is thin.
We also checked 16 of our money keywords in Google from Bengaluru. AI Overviews appeared for 5 of them, including “ai seo services”, “d2c marketing agency” and “seo packages pricing india”. We were cited in none.
Every step below comes out of that gap.
Do them in order. The first three are on your own site and cost little. Steps 5 to 7 take the longest and matter the most.

ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, Claude uses Claude-SearchBot and Perplexity uses PerplexityBot. These are separate from the training bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot), and each can be allowed or blocked on its own in robots.txt (OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity). Allow the search bots. Then check your CDN or firewall too: Google says crawling must be allowed through any hosting layer, and a ‘block AI bots’ switch can undo robots.txt.
Not keywords: questions. “Which SEO company in Bangalore should I hire?”, “How much does a website cost in India?”, “Is X better than Y for a business like mine?” Take them from sales calls, WhatsApp enquiries and Search Console. This list is your content plan and your measurement set.
Give each topic its own URL. Phrase the heading as the question and put a direct one or two sentence answer under it, then the detail. Use tables for prices and comparisons and numbered lists for steps. Make the title, H1 and meta description agree. Keep key facts out of images, tabs and PDFs. This is Microsoft’s published advice for AI answers (Microsoft, Oct 2025).
Google’s AI optimisation guide asks for unique, non-commodity content with first-hand perspective: a page an AI can’t rebuild from what already exists (Google). Real prices, your process, your own data, named results. Put a real author’s name on guides and link it to a bio, which is Google’s ‘Who’ test for helpful content.
Same business name, address, phone, services, founder and founding year on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and every directory. Add Organization or LocalBusiness structured data that matches the visible text. Bing’s guidelines ask for consistent entity names; inconsistent facts make an AI hesitate to name you. See our Google Business Profile guide.
Ask your buyer questions and note which review sources the answers cite. In our category it was Google reviews, Clutch and GoodFirms; in yours it may be Practo, Justdial or a marketplace. Ask every customer, never pay for reviews, and reply to all of them. Google’s own AI features page lists keeping your Business Profile current as a best practice.
Look at the sources inside the AI answers for your questions: industry lists, associations, publications, directories, client websites. Those are your outreach list. Earn the mention with something worth citing, such as data, a useful guide or a genuine partnership. Google warns that inauthentic mentions don’t work and its spam policies apply to AI answers.
Run the same buyer questions monthly, log who gets named and which sources get cited, and work on the gap. The measurement method is below. Expect this to move over months: crawler changes take about a day, reviews and mentions take much longer.
Most of the AI-search advice being sold in 2026 is one of these four. The vendors’ own documents say so.
An llms.txt file is a plain list of your pages for AI tools. Google says Search doesn’t use it and the files aren’t needed for Google Search, and no major AI vendor endorses it for search or citations. Having one is harmless. It is not why anyone gets recommended.
Google’s Maps policy removes reviews that are fake, paid for or exchanged for discounts and free services, and its review markup rules, updated 24 July 2026, ban fake and undisclosed incentivised reviews. A burst of five-star reviews from nowhere is also exactly the pattern a reader distrusts.
One page per city, per suburb or per phrasing of the same question. Google’s AI optimisation guide says making a page for every variation of a query is scaled content abuse. Bing asks for one topic per URL. Write one strong page per real question.
Seeding Reddit threads, paying for listicles, posting fake ‘best of’ roundups. Google says inauthentic mentions are ineffective and may count as spam, and Bing’s guidelines now name ‘Artificially Engineered Language’ and prompt injection as abuse.
Run this on your own site. Most of it takes an afternoon; the last four rows take months.

Ask your buyer questions every month, the same way each time, and record whether you were named and which sources were cited. There is no rank tracker that does this reliably for you, so keep it simple and consistent.
| What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Named: yes or no | The headline number to track month on month |
| Position in the answer | First named gets read; fifth may not |
| Competitors named | Shows who the AI trusts in your category |
| Sources cited | Your outreach and review list for steps 6 and 7 |
| Enquiries from AI | The result that actually pays for the work |
For our own clients, the report leads with enquiries and cost per enquiry. Being named is the explanation, not the result.
Steps 1 to 3 and the checklist are work most businesses can do in-house in a week or two. Steps 4 to 7 are slower: content from your experts, consistent facts across dozens of listings, reviews and earned mentions, month after month.
That is what our AI SEO service does, from ₹50,000 a month plus 18% GST, run by our in-house team in Bangalore. If your main gap is your Google profile or your content, start with Google Business Profile optimisation or content marketing.
Send us your website and three questions your buyers ask. We’ll put them to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and show you who gets named, which sources get cited, and the first gap we would close.

Make your site answer your buyers’ questions directly, keep your business facts identical everywhere, earn real reviews and earned mentions on the sites ChatGPT already cites, and let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site. There is no shortcut or paid placement inside the answer that we know of.
There is no evidence it does. Google says Search doesn’t use llms.txt, and no major AI vendor endorses it for search or citations. It is harmless to have, but don’t pay for it as a ranking fix.
Mostly no. Google treats optimising for AI Overviews and AI Mode as normal SEO. The difference is emphasis: AI answers lean harder on third-party sources, reviews and consistent facts, so off-site work matters more than it used to.
That is your choice, and it won’t remove you from ChatGPT search. OpenAI says GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) are controlled separately; only blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of ChatGPT’s answers.
No. Google says there is no special structured data for AI features. Use standard markup such as Organization, LocalBusiness and Article that matches your visible text. FAQ rich results stopped appearing in Google Search from 7 May 2026, so don’t rely on them.
Crawler changes are picked up in about 24 hours, according to OpenAI and Perplexity. Content, reviews and earned mentions take months, and nobody can promise a date because nobody controls the answer.
It can. When we asked ChatGPT about our own agency, it quoted our Google rating of 4.0 from 22 reviews, and for buyer questions it cited Google reviews alongside Clutch and GoodFirms.
Message us on WhatsApp with your website and your buyers’ questions. We’ll show you what ChatGPT and Google say today, and the one gap we would close first.
